Andrew Jackson Home in Rockcastle, TN with Reviews

You can tour the property, gardens and museum. The site is currently offering a grounds pass, limited General's Tours, limited VIP Tours and limited In Their Footsteps Tours. Audio tours are available on your own device as well. Andrew Jackson purchased the 425-acre farm from Nathaniel Hays in 1804, following the sale of his plantation, Hunter’s Hill. He quickly invested in the local economy, creating businesses in Clover Bottom.

We made reservations online, which was an easy process. 90% of the artifacts in the home are original to Jackson's Presidency. Afterward we were able to wander the grounds.

There are outbuildings and a serene garden where Andrew and wife Rachel are buried. There is a winery adjacent to the Gift Shop, but we did not partake. The Hermitage, the home of late President Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel, is located on the outskirts of Nashville Tennessee.

This is done as a deterrent to third party vendors, i.e. scalpers, who may purchase large blocks of seats and then resell them online at an inflated cost. The term “household” refers to any shared information on one or more accounts. This includes, but may not be limited to matching names, mailing and billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers. Any households that purchase more than the allowed number of tickets may have their order refunded without notice. There are audio devices provided for self guided tours.

The web page about the Wagon Tour advises that the wagons operate "from March to October, weather permitting." So one of our party could hold them while the others toured the home. The museum at the start is easily navigable. There is a relatively short walk to the house itself that should be possible however there are steps up to the house and there are steep stairway to reach the upper floor that may be more difficult. I do not believe there is a lift in the house. So the upper floor of the house may be too much.

The guides will tell you about the room but you have zero opportunity to actually look into the room except during the talk from a distance. The talk is the same so you get a fast rehersed talk while moving to different stations. One of my sore subjects are tours of famous people that spend more time telling you about the furniture or things than tell you about the person. I especially felt bad for two 6 years old that had nothing tailored for them on the tour and left knowing little to nothing about Jackson. Tours such as these are why many people say they hate history. Getting to experience a little of what Andrew Jackson’s life was like 200 years ago by seeing where and how he actually lived.

Today, vistors will find The Hermitage restored to its appearance in 1837, when Jackson returned there after serving his second term as president. This National Historic Landmark features more than 30 historic buildings, a seasonal wagon tour, walking trails, beautiful gardens and grounds and much, much more. The Hermitage Mansion is considered to be the most accurately preserved early presidential home in the country. In recent years, new interpretive initiatives and programs have enhanced the experience of more than 230,000 annual visitors. Tour The Hermitage by horse-drawn wagon for a glimpse into what life was like for the enslaved men, women and children who lived and were forced to work on Jackson’s 1,100+ acre cotton plantation. This narrated tour takes visitors on a journey past archeological sites and discusses their significance in the daily lives of the enslaved community.

We have shared your sentiments with our Director of Interpretation. We hope you will visit the site again in the future and allow us the opportunity to deliver a better experience. Now for the major disappointment, the mansion. Be prepared for fast talking and be herded through the house. They do tours every 15 minutes with 2 different interpreters in the house. This means a max of 30 minutes in the house before you are pushed out.

We were pleased with the interpreter-led tour of the mansion and we were satisfied doing our own thing walking the grounds and seeing the other buildings on the property. But, man, oh man, was I jealous of the people that were allowed to go out onto the veranda. Had I looked at the differences between packages a little bit more closely ahead of time, I might have been willing to pay the extra to walk out onto a 19th-century plantation veranda! Do be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time online. Delivery times may vary, especially during peak periods. His body lies next to that of his wife in the tomb at the southeast corner of The Hermitage garden.

Jackson built the central portion of the present Hermitage mansion between 1818 and 1819 on a site chosen by his wife. The square, two-story brick building followed a four-room, center-hall plan with parlor, dining, and two bedrooms on the first floor and four additional bedrooms on the second. The Hermitage was the plantation home of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, from 1804 until his death in 1845.

The museum and the house are the two main features of this site. The museum was good but was pretty much "books on a wall'. If one takes the time to read everything you will find much of interest. This was a nice place with historically relevant presentations on the war of 1812, the battle of New Orleans and enslaved people.

No one wants to feel their hobby can be invaded by proles with their low rent gear, so audiophools invented "it must be expensive or it isn't good" theme that marketers have taken to the bank. 10 Best Wireless Router of 2022 WiFi, Budget, Gigabit, AC

The wireless standards supported by a router determine which devices are able to connect to that router. These standards have evolved a lot over the years, so it’s important to make sure that you choose a router that works with the same standards as your devices to get the best experience. This Synology router ended up alongside two other dual-band routers (the Asus Blue Cave and Asus RT-AC86U) at the top of our performance charts. Like the Archer A20, each of these routers was able to handle the traffic our multi-client test generated and to give us a smooth browsing experience. And the Synology was able to keep a strong connection to our long-distance testing site, transferring data at a speedy 166 Mbps throughput (by comparison, the budget TP-Link Archer A7 was able to manage throughput of only 27 Mbps to the garage). Any of our picks will easily outperform any router you got from your Internet service provider, or any router more than a few years old.

2019 best home router

Just make sure you spare a considerable amount of space since it’s relatively large. This router is specifically designed to prioritize gaming above other activities to give gamers the best gaming experience during dungeon raids or heated PVP battles in the arena. Lastly, it doesn’t feature the traditional square slab with antennas pointing upward design.

Best Overall Router: Google Wifi

The TP-Link Archer A20 is our pick because it was the fastest router we tested with the best range, it's reasonably priced, and it has features that others lack, such as a quad-core processor and tri-band radios. Those features improve performance by helping the router handle more connections simultaneously, with results that definitely came through in our tests. Although routers certainly can cost more, we think those models' extra features (such as optimizations for gaming PCs and 802.11ax compatibility) aren't worth the extra cash for most folks. If you want to manage how your Wi-Fi network is being used, make sure your next router has parental controls, QoS options, and a guest-network feature. Parental controls allow you to limit network access for certain users to specific times and days, ideal for parents who want to keep tabs on their child's online gaming and social networking activities.

In some cases, the number will come before the AC or AX designation, which simply indicates whether it's using 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) or 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6). There are a number of older standards, like 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, but you won’t find routers that focus specifically on those standards. If you have older devices that use those standards, however, there's no need to worry as almost all modern routers are backwards compatible with older devices. Andrew Hayward is a Chicago-based writer who has been covering technology and video games since 2006. He tested the Google Nest Wi-Fi on our list and appreciated its smooth integration with the rest of the Google Home ecosystem. Google’s Nest Wi-Fi is one of the things that distinguishes the Google Home ecosystem from the competition, offering a tight level of integration that most others can’t match.

How much should I spend on a router?

It isn't as high-powered and it isn't a tri-band system like its big brother, but it comes with three devices that all support Wi-Fi 6 for $250, which makes it interesting. There was also a new dual-band ZenWiFi system last year called the ZenWiFi XD6 -- it performed quite well in our tests, but it only costs slightly less than the XT8. I also appreciated the depth of control in the Asus app, which lets you manage your network and customize that backhaul as you see fit. Bill Thomas is a Denver-based freelance writer who covers technology, music, film, and gaming. The 5 GHz band is significantly slower than the 60 GHz band, but still insanely faster compared to the 2.4GHz band. But this is somewhat limited to a small area and is only compatible with modern devices.

The only truly bad part was how it took me forever to get my decidedly basic router up and running. I went for an easy and affordable option, but looking back, I wish I had splurged on a router with quicker connection times or a more advanced firewall. Remember that those prices typically reflect you buying not just a single router, but one or two mesh nodes, too. And as mentioned earlier, Wi-Fi 6E, with support for the 6GHz band, is the latest standard, but 6E routers are just starting to hit the market and we've tested just a handful at this writing. All you need is to start collecting 6E-compliant client devices to leverage this bargain router to the max. Additionally, the router's firmware updating feature indicated that the router's as-shipped firmware was its most current, even though new firmware was available as of July 2017 on Trendnet's website.

Why We Picked It

These routers are a good fit for apartments or small to medium-size houses with three or four people on the network. If you have more people or a large house—more than 2,300 square feet or more than one floor—you should probably look at our mesh-networking guide instead. A good rule of thumb is that if you've considered adding a wireless extender or an extra access point in your house, get a mesh system instead. The 802.11ac protocol also offers downstream Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) technology, which is designed to provide bandwidth to multiple devices simultaneously rather than sequentially. That means up to four clients can have their own data streams instead of waiting in turn to receive data from the router. In order for MU-MIMO to work, the router and the client devices must contain MU-MIMO Wi-Fi circuitry.

Fortunately, most major cable providers in the U.S. have already "pre-approved" the cable modems from all the big manufacturers. You'll normally find this information on the packaging or on the manufacturer's website. However, if you're still not sure, you can always ask your cable provider if the modem/router you're considering will work with their network. To take full advantage of the bandwidth your ISP provides, you'll need a modem/router combo that at the very least matches, and ideally exceeds, the top speed promised by your provider. The maximum bandwidth is indicated in gigabits per second and is usually prominently displayed in a modem/router's title or description.

It's not ugly, has all the ports you might need, and comes with backup battery capability, so if the power goes out, your phone is still working. Keep in mind, it's not capable of the fastest internet connection out there, but otherwise, it might be exactly what you need. The Ethernet ports on the satellites aren't wired in the same way as the base unit (since the base unit is physically connected to your ISP's line), and the satellites allow devices without Wi-Fi to connect to the internet. Once we got the Motorola MG7700 up and running, it delivered outstanding speeds, reliably maxing out our 100 Mbps Spectrum plan when we were hard-wired via the LAN ports. It’s also worth checking whether or not the router supportsQoS if your main purpose is for gaming or 4K video streamingsince this feature basically prioritizes these two, respectively, above any other tasks. The former gives you the option to connect your computers, laptops, and other network-attached storage drives via LAN, which is the best connection you can get.

2019 best home router

In layperson’s terms, each band is like a separate internet source that your router can accommodate. For instance, most routers nowadays are at least dual-band, meaning they have two bands that can run concurrently. Yet another thing that makes this appealing, especially for most parents, is the parental control feature. You can limit the daily time usage for specific websites and applications for specific family members to keep them from browsing the internet too much.

TP-Link Archer AX11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router

Linksys' WRT32XB router is somewhat unique in that it has been optimized to provide the best performance for online gaming. In particular, this router has been optimized to support gaming on Microsoft's Xbox game consoles, but with speeds up to 3,200Mbps and the ability to run three streams simultaneously, this router should perform well for any gaming network. PCMag is obsessed with culture and tech, offering smart, spirited coverage of the products and innovations that shape our connected lives and the digital trends that keep us talking. The Motorola Q11 is a three-piece, dual-band mesh system that's an excellent choice for delivering strong Wi-Fi 6 signals to homes of up to 5,000 square feet.

2019 best home router

In the end, the key to finding the best wireless router is to consider all of the factors outlined above, and then select the device that best meets your own personal needs. A good standard to look for on a router is four Gigabit Ethernet ports, although some higher end devices include eight or more. Some even allow you to achieve a 2Gbps connection by connecting to two Gigabit Ethernet ports at once, and a few leading-edge gaming routers now offer special 2.5Gbps or even 10Gbps ports. In general, you should look for a router that’s fast enough to match the speed of your internet connection. Your home network enables devices like computers and printers to communicate inside your house, and it also allows your computers, phones, game consoles, and other devices to connect to the internet.

Bands

If you want to take advantage of the faster connection speeds, decreased latency, and more efficient client battery life that you get with Wi-Fi 6, but you need to keep costs down, then the TP-Link Archer AX50 is an excellent choice. It’s easy to install and comes with TP-Link’s Homecare suite, which includes robust parental controls, anti-malware software, and several QoS presets that make it easy to provide application-based bandwidth priority when needed. The RT-AC3200 is a "tri-band router," which means it gives you a single 2.4GHz network and two 5GHz networks to pick from. In practice, you'll want to split your wireless-ac devices between both 5GHz networks, as having too many devices doing too many things on a single network can impact the speeds of connected devices. The RT-AC3200 can help you manage this with its Smart Connect feature, band steering that you have to manually enable within its web-based configuration.

Best Mesh Wi-Fi Router Systems of 2022

Now, TP-Link is doing even better and selling the Deco W7200 mesh router, a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 system that only costs $233 for a two-pack. Motorola's MG7700 checks all the right boxes when it comes to delivering the performance and features most users need in a cable modem/router. If you're looking for even broader coverage, then Netgear's Orbi CBK752 combines a top-rated Wi-Fi 6 mesh system with a fast (and future-ready) cable modem to let you take full advantage of the fastest internet plans in even the largest of homes.

2019 best home router

Everything from surfing the web to streaming video was solid within an approximate 2,000-square-foot radius. In the basement and more distant locations of the house, the signal was weak, but that's to be expected. Lastly, remember that these numbers represent the combined speeds that are available to all of your connected devices across all of the bands the router offers. Don't let the numbers fool you into thinking that a tri-band AC5400 router is significantly faster than a dual-band AC3000 router, as both likely offer similar speeds on each band. Our expert reviewers and editors evaluate routers based on design, connectivity, performance, and features. We test their performance in both wired and wireless configurations, measure their effective range and bandwidth, and analyze their feature sets, including how well those features are implemented.

Netgear Nighthawk CAX80 DOCSIS 3.1 AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 Cable Modem Router

While it was one of the original giants in networking equipment, it was eventually folded into Cisco and then sold to Belkin. Despite changing hands a few times, Linksys still has a reputation for rock solid hardware that doesn’t break the bank, and they make some of the best open source routers available. Most people need both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, because older devices only work with 2.4GHz, while newer devices can really benefit from the additional speed you get with a 5GHz signal. It's also important to keep in mind that 5GHz signals don't travel as far, so good 2.4GHz coverage is still important.

Not surprisingly, the two standouts here are our top two Wi-Fi 6E systems, the Netgear Orbi AXE11000 and the Eero Pro 6E. That's why we put every router we review through our own, independent speed tests in a real-world test environment. For much of the past few years of working from home, that test environment has been my house, but here in 2022, we've been working to relocate those tests to our test lab, where we can do more to control for variables in the environment. If $400 is a bit too much for your budget, know that there's a smaller version of this system called the Asus ZenWiFi AX Mini.

And with the in-app optimization, you can make sure that that signal is a wicked fast and optimizes your network for exactly what it needs. The multichannel signal utilizes radar-sensing hardware to hop on normally restricted channels to extend your network even further. And if you’d like to optimize how your signal is used, whether to prioritize gaming, streaming or voice, you can do that right from the Razer app. It’s not going to win any beauty pageants, but then when you’re this fast, you don’t need to worry about aesthetics. TP-Link’s Archer GX-90 is a powerful tri-band Wi-Fi 6 gaming router that delivers impressive performance and bristles with features like multi-gig connectivity, robust parental controls, network security software, and game optimization tools. Some lack USB jacks, and others limit you to only one or two spare Ethernet ports for wired connections to media streamers, smart home bridges and other common peripherals.

We also thought about the TP-Link Archer A5 and Archer A6, since both rank among the least expensive 802.11ac routers with a typical price tag under $50. However, both also lack band steering, which is available in enough inexpensive routers now that we consider the feature to be a must-have. What this graph shows is how many milliseconds it took to simulate loading a Web page during our multi-client tests. On the left side of the graph is the 50th-percentile result—the result in the middle of the range. We also took a sample at the 75th, 90th, 95th, and 100th percentile—the last being the worst results we got from each device. Keep in mind that while the laptop in this test was loading Web pages, three others were downloading a big file, streaming 4K video, and browsing a second website—this was a busy little network, at a busy time.

Our picks (the TP-Link Archer A20, Synology RT2600ac, and TP-Link Archer A7) will alert you to new firmware updates when you open the Web-based administration page, but you usually have to open that page regularly to check. If you're interested in some straightforward steps you can take to make your router more secure, we like this guide by SwiftOnSecurity. To access your router's Web-based configuration screen, don't use any domain names that your router's manufacturer may have provided as a shortcut—such domain names have been known to get hijacked and can open you up to attack. Instead, connect a desktop or laptop to the router , open a Web browser, and type in the router's IP address; here's how to find it. At long distance, half of the routers kept our garage client on the 5 GHz channel, and the other half switched it to the slower but longer-range 2.4 GHz channel.

If you’re looking for a router that can offer you the peace of knowing that your home network is safe against malware and other online threats, then Asus RT-AX88U has you covered. It’s a high-performance router with a wealth of advanced features, from online security and parental controls to the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, plus enough range and power to cover a large and busy home. Nearly all routers include separate radios for those bands, which lets you connect to whichever band is best. Some routers will automatically steer your connection between the multiple bands available, but you can usually turn that off as well, making each band its own, separate Wi-Fi network.

Even if you don’t have a lot of Wi-Fi 6 devices in your home yet, this router will make sure you’re ready when they do come along, and in the meantime it will deliver impressive performance for all your 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 devices. Don’t let its appearance fool you, though, as this powerful Wi-Fi system can easily cover even the largest and busiest homes with more than enough performance for all of your streaming and video calling needs. A dedicated wireless channel runs between the main Orbi router and the satellite units to keep everything running quickly and smoothly, which means you’ll get consistent speeds, no matter which unit you’re closest to. If you've already got a budget router running your network and you're ready to upgrade to something more powerful, the Linksys Hydra Pro 6 belongs high on your list. With a dual-band, AX5400 build, full support for Wi-Fi 6, and 160MHz channel support for moving data more efficiently, it was an excellent performer in my speed tests, even managing to outperform flashier picks like the also great Asus RT-AX86U.

Out of the 10 routers we tested for this guide, the Archer A20 was the fastest and most consistent. If you're happy with your Wi-Fi, you don't need a new router—it's as simple as that. If you're having problems with range, speed, or reliability, though, it might be time for an upgrade. An older router that doesn't support 802.11ac (also known as Wi-Fi 5), has a weak CPU, or lacks Gigabit Ethernet ports can hold you back significantly. It's important to note that routers rarely, if ever, reach these "maximum speeds" in real-world applications, but if you're looking for performance, consider one of the high-speed routers .

In general, the 5GHz band is going to be your best bet for a reliable, high-speed connection at close and medium range, while the 2.4GHz band is great for devices at the far reaches of your Wi-Fi network, where the improved range is worth the speed tradeoff. You need to be connected to your modem in order to send and receive data from the web -- your router lets you do that without need for a wire. It's basically a big, fancy antenna for your modem that lets you connect with it wirelessly, over Wi-Fi. You can also use that local Wi-Fi network to connect with other devices at home, like printers or remote storage servers. Gaming routers promise high performance and low latency for die-hard gamers, and it isn't uncommon to find them selling for $300 or even $400.

However, it’s also the company’s firstmesh Wi-Fi system, so it’s not something you’re expected to hide somewhere in your basement. Chances are you actually will have one or more of these units in your living space, so looks are important here. Mesh routers use multiple devices to relay a better Wi-Fi signal throughout your home, with fewer dead zones. It's definitely the right approach if you live in a large, multi-story home, or if there are multiple spots in your home where you can't connect as reliably as you'd like. The old-fashioned way is to plug the thing in and connect it with your modem via Ethernet cable, then type its IP address into a browser's URL bar to begin the setup.

The Best Wireless Routers of 2022 for Fast Connections

With multiple devices working together to spread a strong, usable connection across a larger space, a mesh router is usually better than a single, stand-alone router, especially in medium to large homes. In a home or apartment that's smaller than 1,500 square feet or so, a mesh router might be more hardware than you need. There are a number of other factors that we take into consideration whenever we test a mesh router. I run each of my speed tests to the same server, which gives me a good, comparative look at how quickly each one is able to send and receive data. Most of the mesh routers I'm testing these days do just fine, with average latency usually coming in between 15ms and 20ms per ping, but some systems will see latency spikes when they're routing your connection through a satellite extender. That means connecting to a mesh system at range might not be the best bet for gamers, or for anyone else particularly concerned with latency.

It depends on what you need and how many people and devices need to connect, but a small- to medium-sized home or apartment can probably get by with a well-tested dual-band router in the $100 range. If your home is larger, then it's probably worth spending more on a mesh system that can spread more consistent speeds from room to room. And if you're working from home, gaming online or sharing bandwidth with multiple housemates or family members, upgrading to something like a high-speed tri-band router is probably a good investment, too. The Archer A20 is a tri-band router, which means it offers two 5 GHz channels for speedy communication at shorter ranges and one 2.4 GHz channel for slower connections at longer range; most routers in this price range offer only one 5 GHz band.

It's also fully backward-compatible with previous-gen Google Wifi setups, which is a smart touch. Among dual-band mesh routers, I'd much rather have a top-of-the-line Wi-Fi 5 system than an entry-level Wi-Fi 6 system, and even among new competition, the Nest Wifi mesh router fits that bill. The best wireless routers deliver top-notch range and speed for households of all sizes—and all the devices and users in them. The best wireless routers aren’t just for power users, either—they’re easy and intuitive to set up thanks to accompanying smartphone apps, so anybody can get one up and running on their home network in no time at all. A feature called link aggregation lets you achieve Internet speeds up to 2 gigabits by using two connections at the same time. You can connect the main WAN port and LAN port 1 on the back of the router to a cable modem that also supports link aggregation, such as our upgrade pick, the Motorola MB8600.

Available for $100 , the TP-Link Archer AX21 is an entry-level, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router that supports top speeds of up to 1,201Mbps (1.2Gbps) on its 5GHz band. It's nothing fancy, but it offered near flawless performance for small- to medium-size homes in our tests, and it's a cinch to setup and use thanks to TP-Link's Tether app. The Asus RT-AC3200 is a tri-band router at a flagship dual-band router price, with great range and coverage plus really good device- and traffic-analysis capabilities in its UI. Unfortunately, its band steering was broken when we first tested it, and it's still broken; it claims to steer across all three bands, but in our testing it never once connected a device on 2.4 GHz. A recent firmware upgrade added band steering to the Archer A7, along with OneMesh support.

Fortunately, routers have come a long way in the past few years, with a number of today's best Wi-Fi router options boasting impressive advancements and features worth investing in. Tri-band routers have an extra 5 GHz band in addition to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands of a dual-band router. This third band allows more devices to connect and be busy at once without slowing the network down so much. Load-balancing band steering becomes even more important with tri-band routers—that extra radio won't do you any good if none of your devices are connected to it. We used to recommend against spending the extra money on a tri-band router, but busier networks with more smart devices in more congested areas can definitely benefit, and the feature doesn't cost as much as it used to.

Do you lose speed with mesh Wi-Fi?

Although very few ISPs support faster-than-gigabit Internet now, this feature offers a way to future-proof if you know that such speeds are something you're interested in (though most people don't need a connection that fast). You can also link two of the Archer A20's LAN ports together to increase bandwidth for networked storage devices that support link aggregation, such as the Synology DiskStation DS418play. If a range extender doesn't do the trick, consider overhauling your network with a Wi-Fi mesh system. This technology offers an easy way to fill wireless dead zones in your home without the need for additional wiring, range extenders, or access points.

There's a lot to like about it, but the average speeds were underwhelming among Wi-Fi 6E systems. The Vilo mesh router is the slowest I've ever tested, but it's functional, and it only costs $20 per device, plus shipping. A good mesh Wi-Fi system will spread fast, reliable internet speeds throughout your entire home. Since your cable modem has to be registered with your ISP to work properly, it's important to buy one that's guaranteed to be compatible. While some ISPs may let you register any cable modem, most will refuse to set one up that isn't on its approved list. We're aware we're going to sound a bit snobby, but if we were going to go with one of the two Netgear products on this page, we'd save up for the CAX80 only because it looks so much nicer.

Eero Pro Mesh Wi-Fi System

Killer throughput performance, 6GHz data transmissions, and wide signal coverage are all reasons why the ZenWiFi ET8 is our top pick for Wi-Fi 6E mesh systems. At $530, it’s not exactly affordable, but it is one of the more well-equipped mesh systems out there, offering a multi-gig WAN port, USB connectivity, and Trend Micro-powered network security. Performance and value are probably the first things you'll look for as you shop for a mesh router, but there are other factors worth taking into consideration as well. Mesh routers typically don't come with many unique bells and whistles, but there are some standouts. That's a useful trick that lets you make use of your home network's security capabilities when you're connecting to a public Wi-Fi network.

For as long as I can remember, I've had love of all things tech, spurred on, in part, by a love of gaming. I began working on computers owned by immediate family members and relatives when I was around 10 years old. I've always sought to learn as much as possible about anything PC, leading to a well-rounded grasp on all things tech today. We then ran over to our MacBook Pro, now moved to test location #2—long-distance, line-of-sight—and fired up a 4K YouTube video.

There's also theTP-Link Deco X90, a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system that outperformed the W7200 in my tests and adds in a multigig Ethernet jack for high-speed internet plans. It typically sells for close to $450 for a two-pack, but it's worth a look if you can catch it on sale. DOCSIS, which stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications, is the standard cable companies use to give your home internet access. It's been around for over 20 years, so there are lots of different versions of it.

We appreciate that Netgear prompts you to update the router's firmware to its most recent version. Typically hovering around $80, TP-Link's Archer C7 is one of the least expensive ways to outfit your home with wireless-ac coverage—or at least, a portion of it. While it's rare to find another AC1750 router that beats the Archer C7 on price, there are plenty that are faster than TP-Link's router, especially at range. You can see those results for yourself in the bar graph above, which shows the overall average Wi-Fi 6 upload and download speeds for each system we've tested.

What you need to know about wireless routers in 2019

If you want a fast router but aren't ready to upgrade to the new 802.11ax standard, this is one of the best options you have. The router is capable of transmitting on three bands simultaneously with advanced beamforming technology. Linksys equipped it with a quad-core 1.8GHz processor to process the traffic and help keep this router running at top speed even when under heavy load. In addition to being more stylized and decorative than your average wireless router, Asus's Blue Cave AC2600 offers excellent performance with a top data transmission speed of 2,600Mbps. Similar to TP-Link's routers, this one can also be conveniently controlled via a smartphone app, and it has built-in antivirus and security features powered by Trend Micro to help keep your data safe. Razer has developed one of the fastest routers on the market, the Razer Sila, able to cover up to 9,000 square feet when deployed as a mesh network.

If you’re looking for a router that can offer you the peace of knowing that your home network is safe against malware and other online threats, then Asus RT-AX88U has you covered. Nearly all routers include separate radios for those bands, which lets you connect to whichever band is best. Some routers will automatically steer your connection between the multiple bands available, but you can usually turn that off as well, making each band its own, separate Wi-Fi network.

The easier, more modern way is to use the router's app, which will typically walk you through setup in about 5-10 minutes. After setup, you can also use either approach to access the router's settings or change your Wi-Fi password. TP-Link's Archer C5400 is a tri-band router offering MU-MIMO support and 4×4 radios.
